When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

Flutist Angela Rowland is a private instructor and active performer of classical music.  After nearly two decades of maintaining private teaching studios, she continues to modify her approach in order to offer customized flute lessons.  She has worked with students ranging in age from nine years to adult.  She has taught flute lessons at the conservatory, university, and college level.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Congratulations on your decision to take private flute lessons!  Here is a preview of what you can expect.

Introduction and mastery of the flute fundamentals:
  • tone/intonation
  • scale patterns
  • articulations
  • beat levels
  • key signatures
  • ear training
  • phrasing

During lessons, the student's individual long and short range music goals are addressed.  Documenting goals help you create a useful and practical practice plan.  Some of these goal-oriented questions work better with older students.

Suggested Goals for the Beginner Student:

  1. Stop!  Take time to think about what you want to do.
  2. Look!  Pay attention to details for improved focus.
  3. Listen!  Listen to yourself and others.  Imitation is a fun way to learn new songs, and it's good for brain development.
  4. Write!  It feels good to see your progress as well as hear it!
  5. Plan!  Think about what you want to work on tomorrow.  Grin!

Some examples of short range goals for intermediate/advanced students are:

  • practicing the weekly lesson assignment,
  • preparing for weekly ensemble rehearsals, and
  • learning to identify problems to work out during practice time.
  • What do I want to work on?
  • Where did we leave off?

Think about what you want to accomplish....

Long range goals may include:

  • preparing for ensemble concerts,
  • recital performances,
  • upcoming gigs, and
  • ultimately mastering the flute fundamentals.
  • What needs to improve?
  • What skills would I like to work on, including target dates?
  • How can I evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of my efforts?
  • Which discoveries would I like to pursue?
The overall focus in lessons is to enable the student
to unleash their creativity
by revealing the notes behind the page:
the music itself.

Dr. Rowland is located in San Diego, and she is accepting students of all ages and levels for Summer 2011.  Contact her to schedule a free lesson/interview.
